Central library at the university of Baghdad holds a course on electronic indexing

The secretariat of the central library at the university of Baghdad concluded a course on electronic indexing by use of “winisis” program with the participation of a number of employees of government departments and ministries. The researcher Najla Tariq Kazim gave lectures in which she explained how to install this program and how to understand its functions to activate the work of information institutions since the process of building databases is the first stage in electronic documentation of information to serve the institution in meeting the needs of users and this stage is often responsible for the success or failure of what follows. The researcher defined indexing as a ” list of books and other library materials ranked according to a particular system or a list that registers, classifies or reveal the holdings of particular library or a group of libraries”, so “index” is the key of the library and its catalog which identifies the places of its different materials on the shelves of the library. If the function of the library is to provide library materials to the reader so the index is a tool that acts as a link between the reader and library materials available in various fields. She confirmed that “indexing” is the core of the technical organization of the libraries without which libraries are just warehouses full of treasures that can not be useful without a bibliographical index. The researcher dealt with the great transitional witnessed by indexing through using “winisis” which facilitates the process of searching for books and sources of information. Nine participants attended this course representing the ministries of finance, youth and sports and higher education and scientific research.
