M.A student at the university of Baghdad manufactures a new device to identify the behavior of pedestals subjected to torsion in soil

A discussion of M.A thesis took place in the department of civil engineering at the faculty of engineering, university of Baghdad, entitled “Behavior of pedestals subjected to torsion” that was submitted by the student (Omar Yassin Abdid Saleh). The study focused on identifying the behavior of pedestals in sandy soil through manufacturing a special device as the practical part of this research study. The examination program consists of three parts, the first part contains two groups, the first group consists of three circular pedestals connected with the pedestal’ cover (3 × 11.5 × 11.5) cm, while the second group consists of five circular pedestals connected with the same cover that is used in the first set and the pedestal is an aluminum tube of outer diameter (15 mm)  and a thickness of (2 mm) and its end is closed. The researcher used four ratios of vertical load that are allowed to be used (0%, 25%, 50%, 100%) and two ratios of pedestal length (20 and 30) while in the second and the third parts, the researcher used the same high ratios used in the first part and a vertical load of (0% and 100%). The effect of vertical load, length, diameter and number of pedestals and direction and location of torsion load were all studied in the third part of the study. The results showed that enduring torsion increases with the vertical load, when the ratio is 100% and the ratio of the length of pedestal is (20), increasing to about 42% and 53%, respectively, when the ratio of vertical load is 0%, as well as at increasing the proportion of the length of it is 100%, ratio of the length (30 ), increasing endurance at about 51% and 66% if it is compared with it when the ratio of length is 20 for the same proportion of the vertical load. The study found also that increasing the number of pedestals leads to increased torsion when the ratio of vertical load is 100% and the proportion of the length is (20), increasing to about 86%, while the greatest value of torsion angle in all tests is 3 degrees. The thesis was supervised by assistant professor Dr. Bushra Suhail Zbar, while the discussion committee consisted of prof. Dr. Alaa Nasser al-Jurani as chairman and membership of assistant professor Dr. Mahmoud Rashid Mahmood and assistant professor Dr. Mahmoud Diab Ahmed.
