A researcher from the university of Baghdad gets a patent addressing gypsum soil

  Dr. (Mahmoud Dhiab Ahmed), an instructor in the department of civil engineering at the university of Baghdad gained a patent from the central organization for standardization and quality control/industrial property department at the ministry of planning and development cooperation for his invention entitled “treatment of collapse of gypsum soil by injection with acrylic”. The importance of this scientific accomplishment comes from the fact that the gypsum soil covers vast areas in Iraq reach to more than 20% of lands. These form natural foundations of institutions that cause major engineering problems when the gypsum melts as a result of moisture, saturation or leaching leading to cracks in the buildings and possibly the collapse of establishments. Injecting equipment has been designed and compiled specifically for this research after selecting four soils of different ratios of gypsum (18-72%) where standard tests were conducted such as single compression and collapse. The results of the study showed that injecting with acrylic reduces gypsum compressibility (60-70%) and reducing collapse potential (50-60%) since acrylic covers gypsum granular and isolating from water.
