Institute of genetic engineering and biotechnology for postgraduate studies at the university of Baghdad held a lecture on “addiction and its social effects” within the campaign entitled “week of combating addiction”. The Institute hosted Dr. Wathiq Nima al-Dahan, specialist in psychiatry and the sociologist researcher, Dr. Khalida Ibrahim al-Saadi from Ibn Rushd hospital for psychiatry, it was chaired by Dr. Marib and Dr. Weab Ahmed al- Ameli as rapporteur. The lecture dealt with the need for concerted efforts to reduce the increasing number of addicts and attract those infected. The lecture discussed the gravity of this phenomenon on the health of individual, society, family cohesion and social diseases spread in community rapidly such as theft, harassment, rape and street children, as well as the necessity of studying the causes of those phenomena, namely addiction and how to implement integrated programs to combat this negative phenomenon for a better future of our homeland. During the lecture, Dr. Wathiq al-Dahan distributed brochures on addiction issued by Ibn Rushd educational hospital for psychiatry. At last, the lecture arrived at several recommendations, including the need for preventing addiction in drama for its danger on the young people who search for a model in critical age and expanding educational programs at all levels in rural and urban areas and combating unemployment that is the reason for sliding into the morass of addiction as well as calling for studying the genetic aspect of addiction.
